Introduction

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year and welcome you to the first smial newsletter of the year 2000. We begin with what I hope will be the first in a series of reviews, move onto readers' letters, and conclude with ...

Letters

Not necessarily

Isilion Nolendil Eldafuin Laiorë has argued [Reunion 15]that Middle-earth could not have been flat. His arguments are based on Newton's Theory of Gravity which [was] based on observations of the bent earth. It is possible that the original force of gravity was placed at infinity (or sufficiently far away for this to be assumed) which would have the effect of a perpendicular force acting on a flat earth. That this is no longer so after the bending of the earth is not evidence that is was not so earlier.

Tolkien graves

I wonder if anyone knows anything about these Tolkien graves which I came across in a Churchyard at Lower Basildon on Thames, Berkshire? I suppose Tolkien is not that rare a surname but it's the first time I encountered it around these parts. Can it be just a coincidence that a nearby newly-created Community woodland bears the name of "Tookie Wood"?
